This little boy Sam’s* dad suffered a prolonged battle with bipolar I and substance abuse disorder. Sam witnessed repeated psychotic episodes and struggled as his father was in and out of the home during hospitalizations and manic periods. His dad ultimately died by suicide on Sam’s fifth birthday.
Sam’s family is struggling with the loss, as well as with the trauma they experienced while his dad was alive. Since his dad passed, their financial situation has changed dramatically. Sam’s Mom would like to return to her job as a teacher but is unable to do so now because she is not able to secure childcare. They were referred to Parmenter’s grantee, Wildflower, which helps kids rediscover life after loss through the gift of summer camp experiences and more. Wildflower matched Sam with a traditional day camp program with lots of activities and group time.
Sam’s mom felt immense peace of mind having her son in a safe, stimulating place, and she feels great relief knowing that he can now swim! She also experienced the joy of having a happy child! Sam loved the camp activities and counselors and was excited every day to go. As he starts kindergarten, he is looking forward to connecting with the friends he made during the summer.
Sam’s mom reflects, “The entire experience was joyful and was likely the highlight of his entire year. The counselors were warm and helpful, and he had positive interactions with all the other campers. Because he thrives on predictability, he loved the continuity of the schedule and even liked the foods offered at lunch. When your child says, ‘I want to be a camp counselor when I grow up,’ you know it was a positive experience.”
